Looking at both the history of life on Earth and the scientific breakthroughs that led to our greater understanding of the living world, this book gives the definitive overview of the theory of evolution. It takes an in-depth look at the work of Charles Darwin, Thomas Huxley and Alfred Russel Wallace as well as topics such as genetic modification, artificial selection and bacterial resistance. Starting with fossils and early life forms, the book investigates the development and diversification of life on Earth over billions of years. Topics such as adaptation and specification, as well as convergent evolution, symbiosis and genetics help illustrate how evolution affects all living beings and has lead to the huge biodiversity we have on our planet today. Mike Gordon's illustrations lend a light touch and add a dash of humour. - Features biographies of key people, such as Charles Darwin, Alfred Russel Wallace, Thomas Huxley, James Watson and Francis Crick. - Matches the New Curriculum programmes of study for evolution, inheritance and genetics at KS2 and KS3.

All of these statements are false: Christians are science-deniers when it comes to evolution. Real science actually lines up more with evolution than creation as found in Genesis. Fossils are evidence for evolution. The Genesis account is fully compatible with evolution. These questions need answers! What exactly is the difference between evolution right and evolution wrong? Is it possible to bend Genesis to fit evolution? How can one defend belief in a six-day creation from the onslaughts of the evolutionists? How about any questions you have? This book is a must for any Christian about to enter a public high school or university. Accepting evolution as true is the basis for three of the ten reasons Christians give up saving faith. It is time for you to arm yourself with the truth and stand your ground logically, philosophically, scientifically, and most important biblically! Ready? Let’s go!

When it comes to evolution, most people are thumbs up, thumbs down, or even thumbs sideways. No matter where your thumb is pointing, you must ask the question: what is evolution? The U.S. Court System has witnessed seemingly endless litigation over this topic, yet it has used the term in major cases without clearly outlining a consistent and scientifically agreed upon definition. Public schools are required to teach it, but have also not outlined a scientifically agreed upon definition. State and federal educational agencies that create standard curricula frameworks have failed to offer a consistent and scientifically agreed upon definition of biological evolution. Public educators are free to teach evolution based on the direction their thumbs are pointed. This reality has placed the future of science at risk. How logical is it for our nation's educational framework to require biological evolution, but not require a standard definition? If Theodosius Dobzhansky is correct in saying that "nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution," then what is evolution?

A dazzling tour of evolution in action that sheds light on one of the greatest debates in science The natural world is full of fascinating instances of convergence: phenomena like eyes and wings and tree-climbing lizards that have evolved independently, multiple times. Convergence suggests that evolution is predictable, and if we could replay the tape of life, we would get the same outcome. But there are also many examples of contingency, cases where the tiniest change - a random mutation or an ancient butterfly sneeze - caused evolution to take a completely different course. So are we humans, and all the plants and animals in the world today, inevitabilities or evolutionary freaks? What role does chance play in evolution? And what could it tell us about life on other planets? In Improbable Destinies, renowned researcher Jonathan Losos reveals what the latest breakthroughs in evolutionary biology tell us about one of the greatest ongoing debates in science. Evolution can occur far more rapidly than Darwin expected, which has opened the door to something that was previously thought impossible: experimental studies of evolution in nature. Drawing on his own work with anole lizards on the Caribbean islands, as well as studies of guppies, foxes, field mice and others being conducted around the world, Losos reveals just how rapid and predictable evolution can be. By charting the discoveries of the scientists who are rewriting our understanding of evolutionary biology, Improbable Destinies will change the way we think and talk about evolution.

Draw on the wit and wisdom of brilliant scientists to inspire your students as you teach them about a challenging area of biology. This teachers guide, which accompanies the DVD EVO: Ten Questions Everyone Should Ask About Evolution is structured around 10 fundamental questions about biological evolution. The teachers guide explores the DVD's commentary from some of the world's most well-known biologists, who gathered on the Galàpagos Islands during a World Summit on Evolution and were interviewed about everything from what evolution is to how it happens to why anyone should care. While the video from the natural world provides students with vivid examples of the ideas and processes the biologists describe, the classroom experiences further support and develop students understanding of a scientifically-supported theory and its applications. The rigourously structured teachers guide helps you maximise the video with lesson-by-lesson learning outcomes; thorough background; and guidance on preparing for and then leading the lesson from initial student engagement through evaluation. Engaging, easy to use, and authoritative, EVO Teachers Guide and its DVD are must-have resources.

How did life begin? What is the theory of evolution and is it proven? Are we really descended from apes? And has evolution stalled or is humanity just a step on the way to more advanced forms of life? Through 200 mini-essays, expert palaeontologist Darren Naish answers these and many other fundamental questions on the most controversial topic of all. From the theories of Charles Darwin and the Survival of the Fittest to cutting-edge research on consciousness and artificial life, he explains where we came from, how we became human, and what might happen to us next. Immense in scope, and with 200 informative images and diagrams, Evolution in Minutes concisely covers the concepts, rival theories, history and politics of evolution, as well as explaining the development of life across deep time as revealed by the fossil record, from the earliest bacteria via dinosaurs and Neanderthals to humankind - and beyond.

Emergent evolution combines three separate but related claims, whose background, origin, and development I trace in this work: firstly, that evolution is a universal process of change, one which is productive of qualitative novelties; secondly, that qualitative novelty is the emergence in a system of a property not possessed by any of its parts; and thirdly, that reality can be analyzed into levels, each consisting of systems characterized by significant emergent properties. In part one I consider the background to emergence in the 19th century discussion of the philosophy of evolution among its leading exponents in England - Charles Darwin, Herbert Spencer, T. H. Huxley, Alfred Russel Wallace, and G. J. Romanes. Unlike the scientific aspect of the debate which aimed to determine the factors and causal mechanism of biological evolution, this aspect of the debate centered on more general problems which form what I call the "philosophical framework for evolutionary theory." This considers the status of continuity and discontinuity in evolution, the role of qualitative and quantitative factors in change, the relation between the organic and the inorganic, the relation between the natural and the supernatural, the mind-body problem, and the scope of evolution, including its extension to ethics and morals.
